The Retro Gaming Controller Phone Case, Swoppy

Crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter, are filled with a lot of cool and new ideas and a lot of ideas or products that pay homage to something from our past. Swoppy is one that takes a page from Nintendo’s book with a retro game-boy like smartphone case, that actually functions as a controller for your smartphone.

The team at Swoppy has decided to go minimalistic with their campaign. While they are shooting for 59,000 New Zealand Dollars or $41,323 US Dollars. Regina Speer, the teams “Chief Unicorn Wrangler” and creator, said “We decided to go with the bare minimum we would need to make Swoppy happen. The number represents tooling, manufacturing and distribution costs.”

They’ll also be manufacturing the cases locally, in New Zealand where the team is based. SwoppyCase“Working with a local manufacturer allows us fast seamless production, direct communication and quality control. We can insure that the processes and materials used align with our values and expectations around sustainability and quality.” Speer said, “New Zealand manufacturing cant compete with china over price but we decided to go for a quality manufacturer we fully trust.” They’ll also only be manufacturing cases for Apple’s iPhone 5, 5s, SE, 6, 6s, 7, 6 plus, 6s plus and 7 plus. However, the do plan to manufacture Android cases once they have enough request for them, which you can request here.

The cases will be made from a material called Santoprene, which is a kind of polymer, that is used in numerous other products such as the weather seals you find on cars. The material doesn’t require fillers and doesn’t require the same amount of tooling, manufacturing, or cooling time that other materials do.

However, there is one other challenge, outside of funding, that the Swoppy team will face. Shipping their product to their backers, and to the world after they have fulfilled the backer orders from their crowdfunding campaign. Speer and her team even make a note of this on their campaign page and said they’ve taken precautions to try and prevent delivery & shipping issues. “We looked at different ways to distribute from using 3P services to do everything ourselves.” Speer said, “With a Kickstarter campaign it is hard to predict how many we will sell and where our customers will be. We used a scenario approach to address a variety of possible outcomes and we are confident that we are prepared for all possibilities.”

The team is currently focused on their initial funding campaign and then getting the cases to their backers upon a successful campaign. After which they hope to start selling the cases in later this year in September, at a “suggested retail price of NZ$70” or $48.89 US Dollars. They also hope to partner with developers to port games in such a way that they’ll work with the Swoppy case, as well as design games specifically for Swoppy.

You can find out even more about Swoppy on their Kickstarter or their website. You can also follow them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
